Backing board is an easy and inexpensive way to support, protect, and complete your artwork or prints. While we know a lot of our clients already know what backing board is and which type they prefer, this blog aims to educate those who may not know the benefits of using backing board or inspire those using them already to try out a new type with their matted work.
Backing board is a stiff board that is often accompanied by a mat board in which your print or artwork will be secured for selling or display. Backing board can be used for a variety of different reasons outside of displaying artwork; DIY projects, arts and crafts, display boards, etc. However, we strive to provide backing board for the purpose of supporting your prints or artwork alongside a mat board at your discretion. It not only further protects your prints or artwork when displaying or selling them, but it also gives them a completed look. Here at Golden State Art, we offer three kinds of backing board: standard backing board, foam backing board, and uncut mat board.

Standard Backing Board
Our standard backing board is chip board with an acid free, white layer on both the front and back. This option is our cheapest option and great for simple display and selling. One thing to keep in mind when choosing this backing board is that the visible core is brown. This is still a great option and standard in the industry.
Foam Backing Board
Foam backing board is thicker than standard backing board and provides a white core. Foam board is susceptible to more damage when handled improperly due to the material, but provides a clean and sturdy finish for your artwork or prints. This backing board is offered in both white and black and both options are completely acid free. Foam board backing is priced higher than standard backing.
Uncut Mat Board
Uncut mat board is exactly that: a mat board without a cut out. It is 4-ply just like our mat boards, and has a white core just like them as well. Pre-cut this option is offered in cream, white, and black; however, you can order uncut mat board in any color on our custom product builder! This makes it a great option for those looking for a fun colored backing board or a white core thinner option for completing your work.
