From the bustling heart of San Jose, California, emerges the vibrant art of John Giannotti. At 75, John is a living testament to the ageless spirit of creativity, having traded his graphic design pen for vibrant brushes just nine years ago. His journey paints a picture of artistic passion, ignited in childhood and rekindled in retirement, leaving a trail of stunning landscapes, expressive portraits, and a life forever infused with the love of making art.

Simple - paint or draw all the time. Thinking about art won't get you anywhere. AND learn to do art for yourself not anyone else.

John's artistic awakening happened early, nurtured by the brushstrokes of a childhood friend. "There was this kid in the neighborhood, a brilliant artist who taught me all sorts of tricks," he reminisces. "His influence stayed with me, sparking a love for art that wouldn't be denied." Fast forward to his college days, John found himself under the tutelage of the legendary Eric Oback, a watercolor master who prioritized emotional depth over mere realism. Oback's lessons resonated deeply, instilling in John a desire to paint not just what he saw, but what he felt.

Retirement in 2012 wasn't the end of a chapter, but the beginning of a colorful explosion. "After years in graphic design, where precision reigned, I craved the freedom of expression," John shares. He dove headfirst into the world of watercolors, embracing the "struggle to paint spontaneously and freely," finding joy in the unexpected twists and turns of every brushstroke.

John's subjects are as diverse as his moods. He breathes life into landscapes, captures the essence of a human spirit in a portrait, and lately, ventures into the alluring realm of abstraction. But whether it's a sun-drenched meadow or a contemplative gaze, it's the "light" that truly inspires him. "A sliver of yellow in a landscape, the shadow on a face," he reveals, "these are the whispers that call me to paint."

Aspiring artists, take note! John's advice is as clear as a desert sky: "Paint or draw all the time. Thinking about art won't get you anywhere." And a crucial reminder: "Do it for yourself, not for anyone else." It's a philosophy that shines through in his every piece, a testament to the joy of art for its own sake.

John's connection to Golden State Art is a story of mutual appreciation. A fellow artist friend, Keith Munger, pointed him towards our doors, and John found not just quality frames and mats for his watercolors, but also a partner who understands the value of artistic expression. "Reasonably priced, quick to respond, and high quality," he says, summing up why Golden State Art is the perfect complement to his vibrant world.
