Artist Spotlight: Bruce Linton

Bruce Linton is a photographer, calligrapher, and artist based in California. “I grew up in LA in the 1960's. A creative and stimulating city! I studied in college in Southern California with several notable artists. I have been taking photographs all throughout my life...since I was a teenager, and through every format you can imagine. I rely mostly on my iPhone now.” Bruce’s son set up a website for him for Father’s Day, www.japanbrush.com, where you can view his portfolio, contact him, and read more about his journey.

Notice what the art you make tells you about yourself...discover something you didn't know about yourself!

Bruce has always enjoyed creating art, and his spirituality helps him convey his love for the process. “I have always enjoyed translating my experience in the world through art. Painting (Shodo and Sumi-e) these days, photography, and Ikebana (flower arranging). I am a lay Buddhist monk and art is an extension of "practice" or what is often called "mindfulness" today.  (Although not exactly the same thing...)” After completing each piece, he enjoys sharing his artwork with those around him and those who appreciate it. “I am an amateur artist and enjoy most giving my work to friends and family...or whomever would enjoy having it in their home.”

Bruce refers to and sees his work as the “floating world.” He enjoys photographing Japan and is often inspired by the world around him when beginning a new project or piece. “I am inspired by the simplest things I notice. But with calligraphy I am aware that every brush stroke is my life.” To aspiring artists, Bruce encourages having trust in oneself. “Notice what the art you make tells you about yourself...discover something you didn't know about yourself!”
