Julian Jolliffe is a photographer based in Riverside, California. “I am a fine art landscape, cityscape, and architectural photographer and workshop instructor based in Riverside, California. I have been photographing the natural and urban landscape of Southern California for about 17 years now, dating back to 2005 when I bought my first DSLR camera.” You can view Julian’s portfolio and register for his workshops on his website, www.julianjolliffe.com

Julian was inspired to begin taking photographs by his father and experiences growing up. “My love for photography started at an early age, watching my Dad take lots of landscape and travel photos during family trips and vacations. After almost every trip, the family would wait in eager anticipation of the great slideshow that he'd put on, showcasing the many photographs of the great places we had just been. Ever since then, I have been very passionate about photography, specifically the genre of landscape.” As a photographer, he enjoys the connections he has made through his photography. “The two things I most enjoy about being a photographer are all the great people and connections the craft has brought into my life, as well as the ability to share my artistic vision with a very broad audience, both locally and online.”

Julian’s favorite piece of his is entitled “Electric Serpent”. “One of my favorite photographs that I've ever shot would have to be an image titled "Electric Serpent", which I shot back in the summer of 2018. The reason for this is that multiple things had to line up perfectly to get the shot, from the planning stage to execution. Also, the image represents urban life, as it flows through a rural landscape; both things that I am very passionate about photographing.” As a photographer, he enjoys capturing unique landscape scenes. “My most enjoyable subjects to photograph are definitely desert trees and rock formations underneath the Milky Way and the summer night sky. The two things I enjoy the most about this sub-genre of landscape photography are both the sheer amount of planning and precision required to create these impactful images, and the technical execution of the shoots themselves. Nothing brings me more photographic joy than planning, shooting, and putting these types of images together in the post-processing phase.”

When beginning a new project or piece, Julian is often inspired by his past work and the drive to improve. “My biggest inspiration for starting a new project or photographing a new scene would definitely have to be my endless desire to improve upon my past work, as well as to learn and implement new techniques. Photography is a lifelong learning process; the moment a person stops learning and growing is the moment when the passion quickly fades. This is why I always strive to keep learning and push the envelope further forward in my journey as a photographer.” To aspiring artists, he encourages learning and proficiency. “My best advice for someone that aspires to be an advanced hobbyist or professional photographer would be to keep learning new techniques, and practice each one to proficiency before moving on to the next. Watching lots of YouTube videos on the subject is really helpful, too. A person can advance very quickly with all of the great and easily accessible information out there these days.”

Julian discovered Golden State Art through an online search for mat boards. “I came across Golden State Art through a basic google search for matting materials, to be honest. I'm very glad I did, as this is now my go-to shop for all of my matting and packaging materials needed for art shows and competition displays. Your company has been instrumental in the success of my past few photography displays, as well as a number of private print sales over the past year. Your products are top notch quality, error free, packaged excellently, and shipped quickly. You are an absolute pleasure to work with.”
