Jean Manale is a photographer based in New Orleans, Louisiana. “I was born and live in New Orleans. I have been a photographer since I was in my teens. In the last 15 years, I have been doing art markets in New Orleans and other areas around New Orleans. I am currently a regular participant at the French Market In New Orleans, one of the oldest markets in the country.”

Jean was inspired to become a photographer by her cousin. “I had a cousin who was a wedding photographer. I originally wanted to do that, later on I changed mine. I also joined a camera club which inspired me to take photos for the monthly competitions.” As a photographer, she enjoys discovering new subjects. “I love photographing the spontaneity of the subjects I discover.”

Jean enjoys the work of Henri Cartier Bresson. “I love the photography of Henri Cartier Bresson, a French Photographer. My favorite [photograph] of mine is the one I took at the Vatican of a girl sitting high on a wall with her eyes closed in contemplation.” This image is pictured below. Within her own work, Jean enjoys capturing life in her hometown. “I like street photography and New Orleans cultural events.” When beginning a new project or piece, she is often inspired by scenes and events in her community or assignments in the camera club she is a part of.

To aspiring photographers, Jean encourages seeking ideas within. “Photographers, like painters, have to have a project or idea in their minds all the time. Join a Camera Club in your area.” She discovered Golden State Art through a friend. “An artist friend recommended Golden State Art to me. I print all my own work so it is important that I have a reliable mat company to put the print in easily.” Jean began photographing birds during the pandemic.
