Artist Spotlight: Josh Seubert

Josh Seubert is an artist based out of Milwaukee. He illustrates cityscapes, universities, and more around the country and began selling his work five years ago. “I began selling simple designs of regional cities at some of the many festivals MKE hosts. The designs I made became very popular and demand for more cities grew from both festival patrons and giftshops around the country.” He offers his artwork on his Etsy shop here.

Josh was inspired by his lifelong fascination of architecture and cityscapes to begin illustrating them. He was also inspired by a piece by retired artist John Pils. “I was heavily inspired by [Pils] 80s illustration of the St Louis Skyline (my former hometown).” Josh enjoys illustrating cityscapes the most in his work. “While the universities are much more popular, I enjoy illustrating the larger cityscapes the most.”

Josh enjoys the research process when starting a new project, and finds it to be one of his favorite aspects. “I enjoy performing the research on each city or university before creating a new design.” He finds inspiration for each piece by viewing and getting to know the location visually. “Surfing google earth and getting a birds eye view of each location heavily inspires me to start a new illustration.” To aspiring artists, Josh encourages trying everything.

Josh found Golden State Art through a Google search for the type of matting he needed for selling his artwork. “The high-quality matting and frames I regularly purchase helps to showcase my artwork and they are the final steps before it can finally be shipped and hung on someone’s wall.”

Josh will be starting his biggest project yet later this year. “[It] will be the most comprehensive and detailed cityscape illustration of all five boroughs of New York City. It won't be completed until closer to 2023.” To stay up to date on this project and more, check out Josh’s website and social media below!
