Artist Spotlight: Jeremy Scarbrough

Jeremy Scarbrough is a professional photographer and United States Marine Corps veteran who resides in Southern Maryland. Originally from Amazonia, Missouri, Jeremy joined the Marine Corps at 20 years old and traveled the globe for the next 20 before settling down in Maryland to retire from active duty. In 2012, he began his journey as a photographer. “My photography is inspired by my late father, who passed away in 2007 at the age of 58. It was very hard for me to cope with losing him, so in order to keep his memory alive I purchased myself a consumer Canon DSLR and I guess I inherited his love and turned it into my passion. Every shot I take makes me think he and I are having a unspoken conversation and it brings me peace. “

The "rules" of photography are limiting and put you in a box. Paraphrasing Ansel Adams, there are no rules for good photographs. There are only good photographs.

Jeremy enjoys photography for the peace it brings him. “I've served through three wars and really had a difficult time adjusting back to normal life after returning home from my last deployment, so I believe picking up a camera and connecting with nature serves as a form of therapy for my soul. And I really enjoy dramatic scenes when nature shares its secrets with us.” Photographer Peter Lik’s “Endless Summer” is one of Jeremy’s favorite pieces, and he has been inspired to attempt its recreation several times. “It is a photo from under the Scripps Research Pier, located in La Jolla, CA at sunset. I am drawn to symmetry, and drama, and silky long exposures. This photo contains all of those elements. It also reminds me of Southern California, the place my wife and I call our "second home," where we spent nearly half of our lives together while I served on active duty.”

Jeremy is drawn to photographing long exposures of waterfalls; however, he enjoys photographing many different subjects. He is often inspired by the weather when beginning a new piece or project. “A warm, partly cloudy, and calm morning at sunrise is magic to me.” To aspiring photographers, Jeremy encourages being yourself and enjoying the process. “Shoot what you love and don't let unsolicited critics get you down. The "rules" of photography are limiting and put you in a box. Paraphrasing Ansel Adams, there are no rules for good photographs. There are only good photographs.”

Jeremy found Golden State Art when searching for mat board and backing board to display his photos in. “I was looking for a reliable company that produces quality matting and backings in bulk, that was worthy to use when displaying and selling my fine art photos. I gave Golden State Art a shot and they do not disappoint. Golden State Art has been instrumental in taking my photographic sales to the next level. The double mats and foam backings packages really give my work the professional look I was after, and I have used them from the beginning.”

Jeremy recently completed a project in Arizona shooting Tombstone and Saguaro National Park, locations personal to him. View this and Jeremy’s future projects on his website and social media below!
