Kristal Serna is a watercolor painter based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her artwork is inspired by her surroundings in Michigan and childhood growing up in California’s Napa Valley. “Prior to becoming a professional artist 3 years ago, I worked as a lawyer and in other executive positions in the business world. My formal education includes a BA in Native American studies from UC Davis, a law degree from University of Michigan, and a BA in fine arts from Eastern Michigan University.” She offers her artwork for sale on her website, kristalserna.com

Kristal's love for art began when she was just six years old. “I won a ribbon in my school's art fair for an elephant I drew. I don't know why I won though because it was a hilariously bad drawing. I couldn't remember where its trunk was supposed to go so I guessed and drew it coming out of the top of its head!” As a professional artist now, she enjoys the process of creating each piece. “I love the process of creating something out of nothing. It feels almost like magic to take a blank piece of paper and transform it into something beautiful to look at.”

In her watercolor paintings, Kristal loves showcasing the bold colors of nature. “I love bold colors and I'm terrible at gardening. Therefore, flowers are a natural fit for me. They come in an almost unlimited variety of colors, and I never have to worry about watering or killing the flowers in my paintings.” To aspiring artists, she encourages getting well aquainted with the business side of creating art. “If you want to support yourself with your art, then you need to treat it like a business. Set work hours and stick to them, work even when you don't feel "inspired," and continually seek out learning opportunities. Improve not only your artistic abilities but also your business skills like marketing, customer service, sales techniques, accounting, etc. It's not enough to simply be able to paint a pretty picture. Also, it's absolutely crucial to know who your ideal customer is.”

Kristal found Golden State Art through Amazon. “I sell prints at art fairs, and Golden State's mat kits are vital for presenting them in a professional manner and also for protecting them from damage.”
